Visit the historic city of Wells
2 miles from Wookey Hole
The historic city of Wells is a must-visit. As England’s smallest city, it offers a charming, walkable setting packed with history and character. Nestled at the foot of the Mendip Hills and surrounded by the Somerset Levels, Wells combines stunning architecture with a relaxed atmosphere. Once in the city, most attractions are within easy reach on foot, making it perfect for a day trip.
Highlights include Wells Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece with its famous West Front adorned with hundreds of medieval statues, unique ‘scissor arches’, and one of the oldest working mechanical clocks in the world. Stroll along Vicars’ Close, Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited street, and visit The Bishop’s Palace with its moat, 14 acres of gardens, and the tradition of swans ringing bells for food at the Gatehouse, a custom dating back to the 1850s. While the palace gardens require an entry fee, walking around the outer moat and walls is free and offers lovely views and reflections.
Wells also boasts bustling markets every Wednesday and Saturday (8:00am–2:30pm), filling the Market Place with local crafts, fresh produce, and Somerset delicacies, a tradition going back nearly 900 years. For culture lovers, the Wells & Mendip Museum offers fascinating local history and even a WWI trench experience, while A2 Gallery showcases contemporary art. With its mix of heritage, charm, and vibrant community, Wells is a compact city that promises plenty to see and do for visitors of all ages.
